AI Disclosures "Make No Sense" For Game Stores, Tim Sweeney Says
By Levi Winslow

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is quite fond of artificial intelligence, stating earlier this year that the controversial technology will help smaller teams thrive. Now, the billionaire tech mogul has claimed that AI will become so ubiquitous that any disclosures about its use in game development are no longer required.

Sweeney made the comment on X in a reply to motion capture designer Matt Workman. Workman said on November 13 that Steam and "all digital marketplaces" need to drop the "Made with AI" label, claiming it no longer matters. He went on to say that the label only exists because marketplaces "sell to artists who put up a stink initially," though he believes that it "looks ridiculous" and isn't enforceable.

Sweeney agreed with Workman, commenting on November 26 that the tag is only relevant to "art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation." Otherwise, to Sweeney, AI disclosures "make no sense," particularly when it comes to digital game stores like Steam, because "AI will be involved in nearly all future production."

Agreed. The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation. It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production.

Sweeney isn't necessarily wrong about the last part of his statement. AI is everywhere in game development, whether we like it or not. Sony has laid out plans for using AI in gaming. EA wants its teams to look at AI as a "thought partner" while training the tech on their work. Square Enix aims to use AI to automate at least 70% of quality assurance and debugging work by 2027. And Krafton Inc. has invested $70 million to become an "AI-first company" to position itself as a leader in artificial intelligence for other companies in the games industry.

That's not even mentioning the myriad high-profile industry figures--like Gabe Newell, Hideo Kojima, and Masahiro Sakurai--who have spoken rather positively about AI's benefits on the industry writ large.

Despite AI popping up everywhere, not everyone is on board with the technology. Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser is dabbling with AI but thinks it's "overrated." The Witcher 3 director said games made exclusively with AI will be soulless. Both Baldur's Gate 3 (Square Enix) and Subnautica 2 (Krafton) developers have pushed back against their publisher's AI position. And a US congressman is calling for regulations on AI after Black Ops 7 sparked a heated debate over its use.

There are a plethora of fears around artificial intelligence, with the primary one being that the controversial technology will upend jobs and replace humans. Some companies feel that AI won't reduce the headcount of its workforce and that the technology should be embraced by workers or they'll be left behind. However, some analysts believe that the AI bubble is about the burst.
