Cyberpunk 2077 had a disastrous launch in December 2020, but it's now sold more than 35 million copies, reaching that figure faster than The Witcher 3.
As part of CD Projekt's earnings report, the Polish company disclosed the new sales figure for Cyberpunk 2077 and the context around it. Joint CEO Michal Nowakowski said Cyberpunk 2077's strong sales are a testament to the "franchise's enduring power." The sales success also "enables us to be even more audacious about charting its future," he said.
VGC reminded us that The Witcher 3 needed about six years to achieve 30 million in sales, so Cyberpunk 2077 is selling at a faster rate. Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion, meanwhile, has sold more than 10 million units. The Witcher 3 went on to sell more than 60 million units to become one of the top 10 best-selling games of all time.
Cyberpunk 2077's launch in December 2020 was so problematic that the game was removed from sale on the PlayStation Store due its bugs and issues, and CD Projekt processed thousands of refunds. However, despite the issues, the RPG sold more than 13 million units out of the gate to become one of the fastest-selling RPGs in history. Executives at the developer benefitted, too, with the top bosses earning millions in bonuses.
CD Projekt vowed at the time to update and improve Cyberpunk 2077, and the company delivered on what many are calling one of the best comeback stories ever for a high-profile game. Things culminated in the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 release in 2023.
The game expanded to a new place, the Switch 2, when it launched on Nintendo's console back in June. Following the huge success of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt announced a sequel, Cyberpunk 2, which is now in the works at the company's new office in Boston alongside teams in Warsaw and Vancouver.
Cyberpunk 2's dev team is expected to grow.
In CD Projekt's earnings release, the company said had 135 people working on the game as of October 31, which was up from 116 at the end of July. The bulk of the studio's workers are assigned to The Witcher 4 at the moment, with 447 people working on the game (up from 444).
As you can see in the chart above, CD Projekt plans to significantly ramp up the size of the teams working on Cyberpunk 2 in the years to come, aiming to scale to 300+ by 2027. People are taking this to mean that Cyberpunk 2 won't launch before 2028, but nothing is clear at this point.
Beyond Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4, CD Projekt is working on a multiplayer Witcher game, a new IP in the works under the codename Hadar, and a remake of the original Witcher. The studio is also making a new game based on one of CD Projekt's IPs with Saudi Arabia's Scopely.
